Transitioning Into Fall

Changes

The temperatures are changing and plants are starting to fade as the days slowly get shorter. This shift of nature also brings the beauty of changing leaves, crisp fall air, squirrels hiding their acorns to prepare for the winter ahead. This cycle of nature is an essential part of the winter preparation so that nature can rest and replenish.

This is true of humans too. In order for us to bloom and give we have to invest in our self-care. My definition of self-care are the things we do that support our overall well-being…mental, emotional physical. Self-care integrates these pieces together to help us feel replenished.

Integration is a key factor in yoga as it creates a sense of well-being in mind, body, and spirit. This practice is even more critical this year since we are dealing with a virus, multiple stressors, and flu season about to start. Our yoga practice is an act of self-care that we can use to help replenish from the demands of life.

Suggestions

Today I would like to share just a few things you can incorporate into your yoga practice that help align with nature’s cues as we transition into fall.

  • Breath practices that focus on lengthening the exhale
  • Meditation
  • Practicing standing poses for longer periods of time to feel grounded and strong
  • Add some strength with core work or shoulder strengtheners.
  • Sun salutations to build heat
  • Most importantly take a little longer savasana with clothing (socks, long sleeves) that helps you to feel warm. Try covering yourself with a blanket and tuck yourself in to feel a sense of containment as you replenish.
